Rise Design System

Nutrien Ag Solutions

Introduction

Nutrien Ag Solutions's Rise Design System began as a proof-of-concept pattern library in 2020, designed to unify digital experiences across its agriculture applications. What started as a small collection of components has evolved into a fully documented system that enables consistency, stability, and scalability across teams. Rise provides developers and designers with intuitive resources, semantic tokens, and a comprehensive Figma library, ensuring brand alignment and streamlined implementation. Its mission is to craft the core for unified, intuitive experiences—empowering teams to deliver best-in-class agricultural solutions that reduce duplication, improve efficiency, and enable sustainable growth across a complex product ecosystem.

Introduction

Adoption strategy

To move beyond the early proof-of-concept, Nutrien Ag Solutions focused on closing gaps in awareness, value communication, and trust. The team secured executive alignment, establishing timelines for sunsetting legacy components and policies to ensure consistency. A clear vision, mission, and guiding principles were defined, helping teams understand how and why to engage with the system. Designer enablement was prioritized through a robust Figma resource file and component documentation enhanced with video guides. A champion network was created, embedding advocates in product teams to foster adoption during design and development ceremonies.

Technical improvements were equally critical: the system codebase was migrated into the main application repository, eliminating breaking changes and restoring developer confidence. Support was offered through "rent-an-engineer" programs, office hours, and multi-channel communication. Finally, adoption was celebrated through recognition in documentation, Slack channels, and quarterly reports. This multifaceted approach emphasized both organizational behavior change and technical excellence, ensuring sustainable adoption.

Impact

Rise Design System has delivered measurable impact across Nutrien Ag Solutions. Button adoption reached 98% coverage, while semantic tokens now drive brand consistency across the codebase. Development time has been significantly reduced, with 85% time savings reported on icon implementation and a 75% reduction in steps for token use. Office hour participation increased sixfold, reflecting stronger engagement and trust. Beyond metrics, the system has shifted team conversations from tactical debates about colors and icons to strategic discussions about user experience and product goals. Rise has become the backbone of digital delivery, empowering teams with consistency, speed, and confidence.

Highlight

Nutrien Ag Solutions have a unique 'rent-an-engineer' program, which is a hands-on support model where engineers temporarily embed to help teams adopt components. That's both innovative and people-focused.

Timeline

  1. Nominations will be open from Tuesday 13 May. If you have any questions about the nomination process, then check out the FAQs, or if your question isn't answered, please get in touch at community@zeroheight.com

    13 May, 2025

  2. Once the nominations are closed, we'll be collating the longlist and working through it to determine a shortlist. The shortlist will be determined by the team at zeroheight, and will be based on uniform judging criteria (which we will share in a month or two). With the shortlist creation, we aim to remove as much bias as possible and give everyone a fair chance across the board.

    22 August, 2025

  3. In September, the shortlist will be announced, including public voting! We'll notify all folks as to whether they made the shortlist. The judges will then individually judge each shortlisted entry. We'll also have public voting on each category live on the site!

    15 September, 2025

  4. Once all the judges and public votes are counted, we'll then be able to determine the winner for each category, based off a weighted compilation of votes.

    3 November, 2025

  5. In December, we'll gather the community together at an event in London to announce the winners live. We'll also be live-streaming the ceremony for those who can't make it. The live event will be invite only, but we'll offer the community a chance to apply for a ticket later in the year! We'll also post the results to the zeroheight site the day after the event.
