Compass

Econt Express

Introduction

Econt Express's design system, Compass, unifies digital experiences across logistics, fintech, and internal platforms. Previously, fragmented systems slowed innovation and created inconsistent user experiences. Compass centralizes visual identity, accessibility, and reusable components, enabling rapid feature deployment across web, mobile, and partner tools. Built on principles of unified experience, efficiency, and scalable innovation, it reduces development time while maintaining brand consistency. Serving as the single source of truth, Compass has become the foundation for Econt Express's digital transformation, empowering teams to focus on user value instead of redundant design and technical decisions.

Introduction

Governance strategy

Compass operates under a hybrid governance model balancing centralized standards with distributed flexibility. A core team of designers, engineers, researchers, accessibility experts, and a product manager maintains quality and adoption. Centralized governance manages tokens, accessibility, and design guidelines, while federated autonomy allows brand theming, platform-specific implementations, and regional adaptations.

Contribution follows a structured lifecycle—from proposals and research through design, review, implementation, testing, documentation, and coordinated release. Councils, working groups, and brand ambassadors ensure alignment, while community moderators extend governance externally.

Automation ensures scalability: design tokens sync between Figma and codebases, accessibility compliance is validated automatically, and regression testing safeguards visual consistency. Regular rituals—weekly Q&As, monthly adoption reviews, and quarterly strategy sessions—maintain transparency and continuous improvement.

This strategy enables Compass to scale across multiple brands and platforms, harmonize legacy systems, and support rapid business growth, while engaging both internal teams and Bulgaria's wider design community.

Impact

Compass has transformed Econt Express's digital operations. Mobile app users grew by over 1,000% in 12 months, while release cycles accelerated from quarterly to bi-weekly. Component reuse cut design and development costs by 40%, and UI-related bug reports dropped by 67%. Customers benefit from faster services, with package preparation times reduced from 12 minutes to under 90 seconds. Beyond operational gains, Compass powers educational programs, reaching more than 1,000 external designers and being integrated into university curricula. This dual impact—business transformation and community development—demonstrates Compass's value as both a strategic asset and an educational resource.

Highlight

The Compass team have taken all the best practices around contribution and governance, and built a very robust governance model. Not only do they have a thorough contribution model that is working in practice, but they run regular councils, working groups, and have embedded ambassadors in the wide range of products they support.

Timeline

  1. Nominations will be open from Tuesday 13 May. If you have any questions about the nomination process, then check out the FAQs, or if your question isn't answered, please get in touch at community@zeroheight.com

    13 May, 2025

  2. Once the nominations are closed, we'll be collating the longlist and working through it to determine a shortlist. The shortlist will be determined by the team at zeroheight, and will be based on uniform judging criteria (which we will share in a month or two). With the shortlist creation, we aim to remove as much bias as possible and give everyone a fair chance across the board.

    22 August, 2025

  3. In September, the shortlist will be announced, including public voting! We'll notify all folks as to whether they made the shortlist. The judges will then individually judge each shortlisted entry. We'll also have public voting on each category live on the site!

    15 September, 2025

  4. Once all the judges and public votes are counted, we'll then be able to determine the winner for each category, based off a weighted compilation of votes.

    3 November, 2025

  5. In December, we'll gather the community together at an event in London to announce the winners live. We'll also be live-streaming the ceremony for those who can't make it. The live event will be invite only, but we'll offer the community a chance to apply for a ticket later in the year! We'll also post the results to the zeroheight site the day after the event.
